Setting: A balcony in Dolores. September 16, 1810.

Narrator 1: After three centuries of colonial rule, the children of this land realized they had grown up.

Father Hidalgo: (Ringing the bell) Children of Mexico! Will you be slaves forever?

Crowd: No!

Father Hidalgo: (Holding up the Banner of Guadalupe) She is the mother of Mexico, not Spain! Long live Independence!

Crowd: ¡Viva!

Narrator 1: This was El Grito—the Cry of Dolores. Hidalgo was captured and executed, but the war continued for eleven years.

Narrator 2: On September 27, 1821, Mexico was finally free.
